Why vote blank

A blank vote is often referred to as a “protest vote” or a “spoilt vote”. The naming is in fact the major problem for why people don’t like to vote blank. Because it gives it a negative connotation when in fact a blank vote is neutral. A blank vote is blank. So why would you give it any other significance than what it really is? Why would you give it a negative connotation and say that it’s a spoilt vote when it’s not?

A blank vote is as significant as a candidate vote. That is because by voting blank you are in fact giving an opinion. You are saying that you disagree with both candidates and that you would like change.

I have a lot of respect for blank votes. First of all it should under no circumstances be compared to an abstention because the person who voted blank actually took the time to go vote, just like all the other people who are voting for the candidates. They are also taking part in the voting process. They are taking action.

Abstention is worse than a blank vote because when you don’t vote you are saying that you don’t care what happens to your country. But if you vote blank it shows that you do care about your country but that you do not agree with either of the candidates. You are showing your disagreement, you are giving your opinion by voting blank. It is not a null vote, it is a knowledgeable vote full of opinion.

By voting blank you are showing that you are an active citizen who is concerned for their country. You are not siting back in your couch waiting for things to change by themselves. You are promoting change by voting blank. You are saying that you don’t like how things have turned out, you don’t like either candidates and you wish to have another election.

And if everyone votes and 80% are blank votes the government will have to take it into account. The reason they don’t take blank votes into account now is because of the falsely negative opinions people have in the back of their minds, thinking blank votes are useless. They are not useless. And if you start using them, pretty soon they will realize that blank votes do count. They count just as much as any other vote. Because a vote is a vote. No matter what kind of vote it is, it is still a vote.
