    10. Windows of the soul

Voiceless but not without words.

I tentatively put one foot in front of the other, taking slow steady steps, like a baby learning how to walk. I gently moved my left foot to try and get the normal walking motion back into place instead of the usual limp that has taken over recently because of my ankle sprain.

“Come on, we’re going to be late!” My mother exclaimed and rushed onwards. In a few seconds she was already out of sight.
I struggled to catch up, so instead of taking my time to walk I went back to limping. At least that gave me a little speed. I would even occasionally hop.

“Excuse me miss?” I heard someone call behind me. I turned my head around but didn’t stop walking. I didn’t think the person was addressing me. We were in a crowd after all; ‘miss’ could be anyone. However, I ended up stopping actually because a young man was running towards me, his eyes locked on mine. I turned around completely to face him. When he was close enough he handed me something. I looked at his hand. It was a phone.

“I think this is yours,” he said. I raised my eyebrows in surprise. Then looked into my handbag: and in fact my phone had disappeared. I smiled a thanks to him and put my phone back into my bag. Then I looked back at the man and took a good look at him. He had wavy blond hair that went down to his chin, with a small curl sticking out and making a loop. Deep blue eyes behind glasses that looked almost violet. I took a closer look at his eyes. They looked so tender and loving. And his bright smile added to this feeling. I could instantly tell that he was a genuinely kind person, not because he brought me my phone but because of what his eyes told me.

“[Name!]” I heard my mom call. I whipped my head around. She was marching towards me, clearly angry. “What are you doing? Come on! We have to hurry!” She grabbed my hand and pulled me forwards, which caused me to stumble. I silently watched her. Her eyes were the complete opposite of the man’s: full of disdain, contempt, and even… embarrassment? Of me. I quickly understood. I disappoint her.

I looked over my shoulder but the man had disappeared back into the crowd. However his eyes lingered in my memory, giving me courage. Someday, I hope to become someone like him.
The eyes are truly the windows of the soul. They can tell you a lot about the person, which is why it's so hard to look at people straight in the eyes because who want's to reveal themselves?

In a world where most people wear a scorn on their faces, people who smile are a nice change. ;)

So smile! :D
