16: Words of the heart

Original title: When the Heart Speaks Out, Sentiment is Ensured.

I hummed out the melody that was playing in my ears through the ear-buds as I walked down the street hands in pockets. The streets were dark and quiet. Even though it was nighttime it actually wasn’t that late, the days were shorter in winter. It was late afternoon but the sky was already pitched black as if it were midnight. The stars shined bright in the sky and the half moon floated silently next to them. A chilly breeze blew through the trees making the leave waver.

Suddenly a loud crash happened a few feet away from me. I stopped dead in my tracks and took out my ear-buds. A man was sprawled on the ground. A cold shiver ran down my spine as realization hit me. I look up at the top of the building, my mouth gapping open. Did he just - ! I then stared back at the man. He was moving. He was actually moving!

He slowly got up, looking perfectly fine, and stared dusting himself like nothing had happened. He’s alive?! He’s fine?! How is that even possible?!

His eyes locked onto mine. We stared at each other, neither of us moved. His eyes were dull, emotionless. One thing was certain, they completely lacked life in them. Even though his body was alive, his eyes were dead.

“That must have hurt.” I uttered, not knowing what else to say. This is too surreal…

He ignored my comment and looked up at the top of the building before sighing. “I’ll have to try again.” He muttered then headed towards the entrance of the building.

“Wait!” I stuck my hand out. He stopped and looked over his shoulder. “You’re going to do it again? Why?”

He paused before completely facing me. “Because it hurts here.” He brought his hand to his chest, where his heart lies.

I gave him a small smile and brought my hand to my chest as well. “I understand that feeling too. The sorrow, the pain, that stab at your heart. The wound is invisible, so people think you're OK.”

A spark of light appeared in his eyes.

“Walk with me.” I said. He nodded and we started walking down the street.

At first the walk was silent but I had a question on the tip of my tongue that I couldn’t hold back.

“Are you an angel?” I asked and mentally slapped myself. The question came out more awkward than I had intended and he probably thought I was a complete idiot.

“Why do you ask?” He inquired. I didn’t hear any scorn in his voice, so I decided to continue.

“Because you survived a fatal fall.” I explained, glad that he didn’t think I was stupid.

“I think I’d be closer to a devil than to an angel.” He said. I looked up at him, his face held a somber expression.

“Why do you say that?” I asked quietly.

“Because I’ve done some bad things.”

I went back to staring straight ahead, and thought about what I could say.

“We all do bad things," I began. "We’re not perfect. What counts is that you don’t do it again. The past is the past, you can’t change it. What’s important is how you make up for it in the future. And the future is now. The present is what makes the future.” I finished, smiling at him. He looked back at me and I could see another spark of light in his eyes. A much bigger spark.

“Ah!” I chirped. “My bus is here. Gonna have to run. It was nice talking to you. See ya!” I started running but then something popped in my mind and I stopped and twirled around. “By the way, what’s your name?” I called out.

“Ivan.” He replied.

“It was nice meeting you Ivan!” I called back and started running again, barely managing to catch the bus before it was too late. Immediately when I entered the bus I felt someone lightly tug on my coat and turned around to face them. Ivan had climbed in too. What the? How did he teleport here so fast?

“You dropped this.” He said, handing me my wallet.

“Ah! Thanks.” I took it. And just then the doors of the bus closed. We both stared at the doors for a few seconds with a blank expression. The bus started rolling.

“Ummm… Were you planning on taking the bus too Ivan?” I inquired, glancing at him.

“Now I am.” He replied, grinning and tilting his head in a cute way.

EDIT: I actually realized - only really lately afterwards - that the next challenge I'm supposed to do (number 16) was called "Words of the heart", and this one-shot's original title "When the Heart Speaks Out" was very close to the challenge title! So I decided (really late XD) to make this part of the Hetalia 50 theme's challenge. :D
